requested by the lovely [info]consequences, who I'm 349% sure is just doing this to flatter me and laugh at my skillz which are full of fail.

14 steps; done in PS7. translatable? you tell me.
requires little PS knowledge, seeing as I have none.

I'll be following my layer order rather than what I really did because it makes more sense that way.
borned (:P) this icon out of the idea of capturing both his pose and his shirt / his bottom half and top half.
keep in mind this is a guide, not a if-you-do-this-it'll-look-exactly-the-same -- tweak the opacities and filter strengths to your own liking/to accommodate for differences in images. if that makes sense.

Crop your image. This is the image that is on the right, so make sure the subject focus is on the right.
Duplicate your image and sharpen it. Fade sharpen (shft + ctrl + F) at 45%. Set to soft light at 35%.
Create a new layer (ctrl + shft + N) and flood fill with #FFEBCE. Set to soft light at 100%.
Create a new layer (ctrl + shft + N) and flood fill with #FFF7E0. Set to soft light at 30%.
Create a new layer (ctrl + shft + N) and flood fill with #CEF1FF. Set to color burn at 100%.
Create a new layer (ctrl + shft + N) and flood fill with #E3E8FF. Set to color burn at 100%.
Create a new layer (ctrl + shft + N) and flood fill with #D5D4FF. Set to color burn at 90%.
Create a new curves adjustment layer.
On channel RGB, set the input to 151 and the output to 118.
This is where your second crop comes into play. Paste it over all existing layers, and move it to the left.

(All steps from here on regarding this second crop may be done in a new workspace; I'm just lazy.)
Duplicate your second image and sharpen it. Fade sharpen (ctrl + shft + F) at 30%.

(I left it at normal, so yes, the duplication is useless. I just did it to compare the two.)
Duplicate your second image again and sharpen it. Fade sharpen (ctrl + shft + F) at 50%. Set to screen at 15%.
Create a new layer and flood fill with #D0D0D0. Erase the right until it covers only your left image (you can lower the opacity to check and see if the grey is overlapping your right image). Set to hue at 60%. (aka quick way to control your monochromify (THAT IS A WORD!)).
I took this texture by [info]pildas and kung-fu'd it (don't try this at home, kids). I pasted the end result (don't save that, it sucks) over all existing layers and set it to linear burn at 65%.
Miscellaneous time! Add whatever.
The text here is 'simulate', 2 pt Georgia anti-alias sharp with fixed kerning (300), set at soft light 100%. (gasp for air!)

END THE CRAPPY. XD
thank you for reading! if you have any questions, feel free to ask. & I'd love to see your results. :3
(seriously, dear, I have no idea why you chose this icon. My sister says it makes her head hurt. and it's like, full of n00b. :x)

I am fully not laughing at you, but I did laugh at the first sentence, you silly dear. ♥

I chose it because your awesome fade-y way of iconing is creative and neat and made of win because it looks like exclusion abuse and isn't. ♥

lol whut.

XD exclusion sort of scares me. I rarely use it except for my second way of coloring (the first one being the one I used here on the first image) which I used a lot on that gazerock post and doesn't turn out so well and when I'm using scratch textures. :P

Lawl, I have no 'fade sharpen' or curves. :O So I'll make do without.

XD; I abuse it. I'm going to follow this tutorial and learn how to not depend upon it entirely. (And your use of scratch textures is lovely; they hate me.)

you poor baby :( lmao.

Does that make it a proud mother? because that's what it sounds like D|
Are you kidding, I just slap it on, throw it on exclusion, and erase the parts that make the subject I'm iconing look like they have some horrible terrible disease. XD
